FU money (also written “F-you money”) is the amount of savings or passive income that gives you the psychological freedom to walk away from an unsatisfactory job, toxic workplace, or unwanted situation without experiencing financial panic. It is a stepping stone toward full financial independence.
Unlike an emergency fund (typically 6–12 months of expenses), FU money is usually larger—often 1–3 years of living expenses or more. The exact amount is personal: it is whatever makes you feel secure enough to say “no” when you need to.
FU money is closely related to your FIRE number but represents an earlier milestone. Many people aim for FU money first, then continue saving toward full early retirement.
